An Old MacDonald Farm themed birthday

I is a sucker for all things purple. So in December (2019) when we asked her what kind of birthday party she wanted, we expected her to say "Purple". I was already thinking of doing a purple princess or unicorn kind of theme.

However, to our surprise she said "Old MacDonald Farm" 🐷🐴🐮🐑🐥

I spent the next few days looking up Pinterest for farm/barnyard themed party inspirations. We had decided to do I's birthday in the party room of a condo where K's niece lives. The condo management had strict instructions that one should not stick / attach anything onto the walls. So I had limited options to begin with.

Since it was already December and invites had to be sent out, I started off with her birthday invite first. I came across this website Drevio that has free printable templates. You can download their templates and then use Canva to edit and design it according to your needs.

Here is an online tutorial that they have posted on their website. It shows you how to download a template available at Drevio and then edit it using Canva . A fairly simple video - https://www.drevio.com/online-invitation-tutorial/

Some options that showed up in the search results for a farm themed template....

I picked the last one shown in the screenshot above. And this is how it turned out....I was pretty happy.

Next, I visited Dollarama and Party City looking for farm/barnyard related party decor. Here are some of the things that I ordered from Amazon -

1. A 7 feet by 5 feet backdrop - This one was very close to what the invite looked like. It also had some really good reviews. I must say, it really looked amazing at the party. The colors were vibrant and it was huge, perfect for the party room.

2. Gingham print red tablecovers - I didn't want to go with solid colors as I wanted something more farm styled. I could not find the gingham print ones at any Dollarama (they only had plain solid colors). So I ended up ordering these from Amazon. This particular one comes as a pack of 6 and are 54*108 inches in size. They are disposable and cleaning up after the party was so easy. They are pretty thin but they did work as expected for the entire duration of the party. I also used this on the center table that was in front of the backdrop. But to cut the colors a bit, I folded and placed a green table cover on top (like a runner).

3. Cow print balloons - Again, I could not find the cow print balloons at Dollarama or Party City so ended up buying them from Amazon a few days before the party. Thank god for Amazon Prime!

Here are some pics from the party. Let me know if you liked them.

Red and black balloons were from Dollarama. The chalkboard signs were from Party City but I have also seen them at Dollarama before. They are cheap and absolutely reusable either in your kitchen or by your plants or in your bathroom; the options are endless. I used them to write OINK, BAA and MOO to match the e-invite. The sheep belongs to and sits in the kids room on their dresser. The cowboy hat belonged to V. It no longer fits him but I had put it away for I to use it one day. The fake eggs are from my kitchen decor (I have seen similar ones at Dollarama during Easter). I simply put them in a wooden basket (from my pantry) to complete the look on the table. The light string is from my living room and can be found at Dollarama. It runs on batteries and looks lovely when placed in an empty vase or glass jar. I used existing boxes that I found around the house to act as table risers (to place the egg basket, the cake, one of the pig lantern) and placed a burlap cloth on them for a complete farm look. The burlap roll can be found at Dollarama too. I simply cut it into 3 to hide the boxes.

Unfortunately, I don't have pics of other portions of the party room. But all table were covered with the same red gingham table covers and a similar (but smaller) balloon arrangement was placed over the table in the center.

The pig lanterns were a DIY and I will post next on this topic.

In all, I think the decor looked really good and the party was a hit. Kids had a blast.

Hello 2020!

Happy new year everyone and welcome to 2020. It's been quite a long time since I wrote here. We moved countries and are now settled in Toronto, Canada.

V will soon turn 8 this May and I just turned 3 this January. Yes, I am now a mother of a naughty daughter as well 😇. I love my son but to have a daughter is a wonderful feeling in itself!

Anyway, like I said turned 3 and we had an Old MacDonald's Farm themed party for her. So my next post will be about her birthday and some DIYs that I did for her birthday decor. What a great way to start writing again...

A Toy Story

I love going to fairs & exhibitions. After moving to Hyderabad post-marriage, I would visit lots of fairs & exhibitions to pass my time (while looking for a job of course). However, once I was employed again (read busy), my visits became fewer. And then they completely stopped after V was born (read busier..!).

Recently, I had been to a furniture exhibition at Hitex (a convention and exhibition center in Hyderabad). One of the stalls there had coir toys on display. They looked very cute especially the camel. Unfortunately, they were not on sale and were only used as display items at the stall. Of course, I asked them if they were willing to sell 😀 but unfortunately they said NO.

Today I google'd to see if I could find such toys for V. Wonder if V will play with them or simply stuff his mouth with the coir. Like he did to his paper mache parrot which I got from Shilparamam! (Will post about paper mache sometime). He bit the parrots beak. Not only that, he even hit the parrot so hard on the ground that it broke into two 😩

Coming back to coir toys....found similar ones on Craftsvilla. But these don't look as cute as the ones I saw at the exhibition.

How about using coir planters in your garden? Such a unique idea...
